Discussion 29

Cough. I didn't get my days mixed up again. Nop.

Welcome to another discussion round! It is a pretty straightforward game where I give you a question that you'll answer in a new comment for two random cards. Since this is a discussion, don't be shy! Feel free to comment on other player's threads too~

With Fathers Day coming up in the U.S, this round's discussion is...

"Who do you consider the best and the worst parents in anime and video games and why?"
(Example: Chiyo-chichi has to be the most amazing cat/dad/thing ever because he's bullet proof and possibly Santa. Also Gendo Ikari is a buttface. )

Have fun everybody! You've got until June 16, 2013 to comment!

SPOILERS (maybe?)

Worst parent: That father from Fullmetal Alchemist who fused his daughter together with her dog. That was one of the worst things I have ever read in such a manga. Best parents though…well, I haven't watched much of it but I think Akio and Sanae from CLANNAD fit this description since they seemed caring and loving to me.

Pokemon parents seem to be pretty lean back and not to worried about your well being, So imma vote them for being pretty crappy parents. but on the top of my head, idk who is good or bad at parenting in series, cause frankly we never really focus on parents in stuff, cause no one seems to really care maybe XD?

For worst parent, I would have to say Milia from the Macross series. That's only based off of the scene in the original Macross anime where Milia throws her baby to Misa so Misa can hold the baby. I don't care that Zentradi babies are supposed have stronger bones than Earth babies, you just don't throw your baby and hope the other person catches. I also thought Baki's parents from Baki the Grappler were kinda crappy, but that's just me.

I can't really think of anyone who would be considered a good parent. Maybe Cecil and Rosa from Final Fantasy IV during the After Years game? Laguna from Final Fantasy VIII was a good "father" to Ellone in that he saved her but could be considered a crappy dad to Squall since he wasn't there for Squall's birth or Raine's death that caused Ellone and Squall to become orphans.

Darn, someone already said Pokemon for worst parents! Who would let their pre-teen kid wander off around the world fighting/capturing monsters that could kill their child.

Best parents seems a little harder. I think that most games and anime seem to revolve more around bad parents than good ones haha

Kinzo from Umineko has got to be way up there as far as parents that should not have responsibility over their children.......... along with Rosa... and ok a lot of Umineko parents are awful

As far as good parents... It's been a while since I watched/read Ouran, but I was fond of Haruhi's dad. Also I super loved Phoenix Wright as a dad in Apollo Justice ok ;; even though I think he made questionable decisions sometimes. I'm blanking on other parents I like even though I know there are more orz.

/that's it that's the whole comment

No haha, uhhh best parents. Why is this so hard to think up on the spot. Nobody has parents in anime they're all dead. All I can think of right now are Madoka's parents from PMMM. THEY WERE ALIVE AND PRETTY SWEET PARENTS.

SOMEONE ALREADY SAID SHOU TUCKER LMAO but my second choice for worst parent is Ging from Hunter x Hunter. LITERALLY THE WORST PARENT (anyone who's read the chimera ant's arc will understand).

I can't really think of anyone who is the best in canon, but me and my roommates have all agreed that the UtaPri boys have the best mommy in Haruka, the protag! We come up for lots of headcanons about she doting on them and them being uber protective of her! cuuuute

As neat as they may be, I don't think Usagi and Mamoru were the best of parents (considering their kid had to come back in time to retrieve their younger selves to save their older selves and all...)

Now, Pokemon's parents aren't half bad though! In Gen 2, your mom would save up money for you (and sometimes buy you neat stuff with it) as well as heal your Pokemon for free and let you rest whenever you needed. Plus, encouraging phone calls too! (and in later Generations, even give you Running Shoes and special things like the PokeGear, etc)

I think Ichinomiya Seki, Kou's dad from Arakawa Under the Bridge might not be the worst parent, but he certainly is one of the weirdest. I mean dressing up as a baby and telling your kid to NEVER accept favors seems kind of out there. That being said, everybody in Arakawa is a weirdo XD

Ok, now, the worst parents have to be Gambino from Berserk and Matou Zouken from Fate/Zero. I mean Gambino, dude, selling your kid? That's just utterly and completely messed up! And Zouken, filling kids with worms that would slowly killed them it's just awful D:

As for the best dad, I think that would be Daikichi from Usagi Drop! He was so normal and loving! And he was adorable when learning how to be a dad ;A;

(I also agree with the Chiyo-otosan example! Having the voice of Wakamoto Norio makes you INSTANTLY cool and amazing XD)

Worst would be Chopper's biological parents because they are disowning butts who should be made into venison stew.

best: I've been out of the anime/manga loop for awhile now but I think granny from fullmetal alchemist is one of the most supporting guardians the brothers and winry could ever have. the world is full of dangers but she let them pursue their dreams and still remained their family and opened up her home whenever they returned to visit (or have edward's arm checked out/fixed :p)

worst: it has been mentioned about the alchemist father who fused his daughter and his dog just to get funding/approval for his research. terrible! );

The best would be Naruto parents, cause they sacrificed a lot to safe Naruto and the village. The worst parent ever? Would be Bayonetta's Dad. I mean, really? To only have a child for your personal gain, ya... you never loved her. D

Best: I think Madoka's mom is amazing. You rarely see a mother and daughter bond in anime/video games but despite her mother being a workaholic she clearly cares deeply about Madoka, and they have a strong, healthy relationship. Another parent I thought of is Fujimoto, Rin and Yukio's dad from Ao No Exorcist!

Worst: I WAS LIKE "HOW HAS NOBODY SAID GENDO IKARI YET" and then I realized that he's the example. Duh. But seriously, Gendo Ikari. I know it's unoriginal I'm rewatching Evangelion right now and I honestly cannot think of a fictional parent worse than he is. (I'm gonna have to second/third/fourth/whatever the dad who used his daughter in human experimentation from FMA, too.)

[personal profile] venachan 2013-06-10 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm, I'd have to say one of the best dads in anime would be Fujitaka from CCS! He worked hard at his job as a professor/archaeologist but still made time for Sakura and helped her with projects (cooking/baking/speaking at her school)

As for the bad parents.. I'd say Usagi's parents from Sailor Moon weren't the best. Sure Ikuko made sweets and cooked all the time, but how do you not realize your daughter being gone all the time at night??

i think there are way more bad parents in anime than good ones, but i like the dinosaur dad in inazuma eleven go! as for bad parenting i'm gonna go with the twins' mommy from star drrrrriver!

I'm going to go on with the deranged scientist theme and vote in Prof. Hojo for unethical and destructive experimentation on his child (who was born for the sake of experimentation itself)...

I'm going to give kudos to the Kudos (Yusaku and Yukiko) for being members of the apparently rare species of good anime parents! Even though their son is in a constant state of peril, the author gives the reader some sort of confidence that his parents are always watching over him and making sure things are alright while letting him solve his problems his own way. ALSO Yusaku writes mystery books, which is a plus in my book. XD

To be honest, I am not too fond of the concept of parents to begin with and in media, it's one of these aspects I ignore unless I find the parent characters themselves interesting. For the best ones, I really want to say Ryotaro Dojima from Persona 4 and Ryūken Ishida from Bleach. Now, I know they're not perfect parents by any means. They both aren't good with expressing their emotions, making them quite harsh which isn't too helpful with a kid or a teenager that's growing up. Both of them aren't exactly honest about their feelings or themselves either, especially Ryūken. Yet, I find think they're one of these few parents that I thought would really do anything for their kid and that is what makes a parent "good" to me. They aren't perfect and their attitude isn't something their kid would understand, for the most part, but you can see it's just their way of caring for them and keeping their kids safe. I guess I just find such dedication meaning more than being nice and understanding to a kid, or another person. I can't believe I went on and on about that, me and my rambling. Though Cherche from Fire Emblem is getting a honorable mention here.

As for worst parents, I can really think of many. I absolutely cannot stand Usagi from Sailor Moon, both as a character and as a parent. You can see she cares about Chibiusa at times but her attitde and behavior towards her for the most part just bothered me. There is also Charles zi Brittania from Code Geass and as mention before, the father guy from FMA. I saw it for the first time years ago and it never fails to make feel extremely uneasy.
